Scotia Lodge: 4 Reasons To Book This Historic Boutique Hotel

The 100-year-old Scotia Lodge, a boutique hotel in the Redwoods of Scotia, California, recently went through a renovation and renaming and features modern, unique, and cannabis-friendly lodging and amenities for tourists and locals alike. People are generally attracted to the Redwoods since these trees are some of the tallest and largest in the world, and they can be seen up close in Scotia. Now, with Scotia Lodge, travelers can have a fully rounded experience right in the heart of this famous destination.

Here are 4 great reasons to book a stay at Scotia Lodge

  1. Location, location, location

Scotia Lodge

The Scotia Lodge is conveniently located at the Northern entrance of the Avenue of the Giants (immediately off Highway 101), making the property an ideal location for travelers who want to explore the Redwoods State and National Parks.

Humboldt’s sprawling beaches, rivers, historic towns, and burgeoning commercial cannabis industry are other key draws in the region.

The hotel is tucked away, but you’ll notice the historic aspect of it right away due to its architecture.

2. History resonates

Scotia Lodge

Originally built in 1923 as The Mowatoc Hotel, Scotia Lodge was then likened to a small-scale version of “the grand resort hotels of the national parks” and served as a stagecoach stop between the Bay Area and Eureka.

The hotel later became known as the Scotia Inn. The hotel was a centerpiece of the region, hosting guests from all over the world, grand weddings, and holiday celebrations. History adds charm to any hotel, especially those that are a century old. You can feel transported to another time and era, and get a great sense of place.

The hotel is one of the best examples in Scotia for a historic property.

3. Beautiful restoration

Scotia Lodge

For some time, the Scotia Inn was neglected and closed its doors in 2018. Humboldt Social purchased the Scotia Inn from The Town of Scotia in early 2021 and carefully restored the space while preserving its historic integrity, including Craftsman-era woodwork and antique clawfoot tubs.

Scotia Lodge features 22 guest rooms, a grand lobby, ballroom, dining lounge, indoor and outdoor event spaces, and Main + Mill restaurant. Named after the intersection where Scotia Lodge sits, Main + Mill serves classic road food (salads, burgers, and filling entrees) and craft Americana cocktails in its full bar.

Restoration is something that most guests typically don’t consider when booking, but restoration and preservation shows a deep commitment to building a wonderful welcoming hotel with plenty of thought going into the look and feel for guests.

4. Authentic cannabis experience

Humboldt Provisions

Humboldt Social is a Humboldt-County based hospitality group with a mission to normalize connections between hospitality and cannabis, and it’s now managing Scotia Lodge.

Scotia Lodge will be joining Humboldt Social’s other hospitality and cannabis ventures, including the newly opened Papa & Barkley Social (with separate legal ownership), an innovative cannabis retail concept with a curated dispensary, cannabis day spa, food truck restaurant and outdoor smoking lounge. Inspired by the success of Papa and Barkley Social, Humboldt Social will soon be adding outdoor smoking areas to all of its locations.
